FDA to Hire Additional Scientists To Expand Drug Safety Operations - WSJ.com
A series of recalls of pharmaceutical and food products and revelations about the suppression of safety concerns within the agency over certain popular drugs have kept the FDA under scrutiny on Capitol Hill. The 1,300 hires will add to the agencys 10,000 employees and nearly triples the number of people hired by the FDA from 2005-2007.
About 700 of the additions will be funded by increased user fees levied on companies the FDA regulates. The surge is driven by the FDA Amendments Act of 2007 and the Import Safety Plan.
